Chadar Trek (Standard)

Region Ladakh: (Jammu & Kashmir)
Duration: 9  days
Grade: Vigorous
Best season: Jan-Feb
Start/end point: Leh
Highest altitude: 3680 meter (Nyerak)

The Chadar Trek Ladakh, which is done on the frozen river of Zanskar, is looked upon as an adventure seekers paradise. Trekking in ladakh , especially the trek to chadar is every travelers dream, and rightly so because the lunar landscape and endless skies overhead makes trekking at chadar memorable. It also challenges the skill and endurance of trekkers. The beauty is even more surreal as one moves ahead and so, this is one of the most celebrated and exquisite trek of the region. Walk on a frozen river bed, live in caves along the way and fight the twin difficulties of cold and altitude which makes this trek adventurous. The Chadar Trek Ladakh is without doubt one of the best treks for all adventure lovers.

The region is a difficult place to travel especially in the winters. The mountains are steep and in the winter snowfall closes many of the mountain passes and makes the few roads treacherous. Villages, especially the remote ones become completely inaccessible during the snowbound season usually November to March. And the frozen Zanskar then becomes a boon to the many snow-bound villages by becoming the passage to civilization. Zanskar trek or the frozen river trek offers experiences of a lifetime to adrenaline seeking trekkers.

Day 09 : Depart From Leh

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Lah(3500 m)
Arrive in Leh airport where you would be greeted by our representative and transfer to your hotel. Today, we would spend the day in the room itself to acclimatise to the high altitude. This is absolutely necessary and is most important for the days ahead. Overnight in the hotel.

Day 2: Lay chilling shingra yokma (3200 m) Drive  3/4  Hours & Trek/ 1 hrs
Post breakfast, we take a beautiful drive through the beautiful scenery with your first views of the Indus river and later the Zanskar river at their confluence at Nimoo. From Nimoo you follow the Zanskar to the roadhead at Shingra Yokma.  From here we Decend down to Forzen Zanskar river and we will have practice session. Overnight in trekking tents.

Day 3 Shingra yokma to shingra Gokma (3350M) ( Trek/ 4- 5 hrs)
We begin the day at 7:00 am with a cup of hot tea. After breakfast, we set off on the “Chadar” which will be our routine for the rest of the trek. Today, we will trek close to 6-7 kms depending on the fitness of the group. Though our objective would be to get to Shingra Gokma we could camp after also in case the going gets tough during the day. This is something that we would follow all through the trek where we would keep the itinerary flexible to accommodate the group depending on fitness levels. Overnight in trekking tents.

Day 4: Shingra Gokma to Tibba Cave (3400 m) ( Trek / 5-6 hrs)
Post breakfast, we set off for Tibb Cave. Today we trek through the deep gorges of the Zanskar valley with sheer cliffs on both sides. The lack of direct sunlight keeps the snow well packed for the trek. We end the day at the big cave here which is used by the locals when traversing this valley and set up camp for the night. Overnight in trekking tents.

Day 5: Tibba Cave – Nyerak (3680 m) (Trek 6 / 7 Hours)
Post breakfast, we continue the walk through the gorges to the Nyerak village. Enroute we pass a large frozen waterfall which is gushing water during the non-winter season and is a stop point on our rafting trips down the Zanskar river during the Aug-Sep period. Today we camp below the Nyerak village and one can go up to the village in the evening. Overnight in trekking tents.

Day 6: Nyerak – Tibba Cave (3400 m) (Trek- 6/7 Hours)
Post breakfast, we begin to retrace our steps on the return trek. Though we will be returning by the same route, a lot of the trail would have changed as the river changes by the hour during the season depending on the temperature and sunlight. So in most cases it will be like a different trail itself!! We camp overnight at the Tibb cave. Overnight in trekking tents.

Day 7: Tibba Cave - Shingra (3350 m) (Trek 5 / 6 Hours)
We retrace our steps to Shingra Gokma. Overnight in trekking tents.

Day 8: Shingra Gokma to Shingra Yokma (3200 m) Leh (Trek 3/4 Hrs) (Drive ¾ Hrs)
Today is the last trek day as we trek back towards Shingra Yokma. Then board our vehicles to drive back to Leh. Once in Leh, we check into our hotel and have a relaxing hot water bath and relive the memories of this wonderful trek. Overnight in the hotel.

Day 9: Depart from Leh Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

  • Personal trekking gear
  • You can save on buying expensive trekking equipment for the trek by hiring the same from our gear store. High quality equipment is provided at reasonable rental/sale and you are assured of clean equipment that has been checked for its efficacy.
  • Transport Options by Air
  • For travel between Delhi and Leh, the advised mode is the flights that ply between these two places. There are a number of flights that operate on this sector with all of them being early in the morning to take advantage of the clear weather over Leh. In case you are travelling from outside Delhi, it would be best to stay in Delhi the previous night to catch the connecting flight the next day. As flights in this sector tend to be expensive, you are advised to book early to get the best fares.

Weather Condition

  • In Leh, the temperature in the daytime will be between -10 to 0 °C, depending on weather condition. The temperatures would drop after sunset till sunrise, and one can experience temperatures as low as -25 °C.  Feather jacket is a MUST not just for the trek but around Leh town, with warm gloves and warm hat. If we visit monasteries it is necessary to take your shoes off, in such cases thick warm socks are necessary.
  • On the trek, one needs to plan for extreme winter conditions, which means you need to be prepared for -10 to -30 °C temperatures, cold winds and protection from snowfall and getting wet.  Especially plan for getting wet feet, so we advise you to wear water proof rubber boots with warm liner inside, this is sufficient if you are walking through ankle deep water. You may be required to cross water which can be knee deep, in such case you would need to remove your boots cross barefoot or with sport sandals and after crossing dry your feet wear warm socks and continue the trek. The walking on Chadar is walking on hard ice which is slippery. In our experience, gear like Yak-Tracks (a grip made of metal and rubber which can be attached below the boots) is very helpful. Please be prepared for taking a detour if the ice is not formed, in such sections we may have to do some scrambling on the rocks or traverse on some lose unstable sections.
  •  Please keep in mind that the above information is not exact and does not account for sudden changes. Whatever the temperatures and conditions rest assured we will be prepared to handle it with ease as we use equipment of very high specifications.

Loads of Enthusiam!! And a  pledge to leave no trace.

  • Carry your stuff in a duffel bag, soft shoulder bag or a rucksack. Avoid suitcases, trolleys or any other hard luggage. As you will be walking long distances carrying a rucksack, avoid bringing unnecessary items on the trip. Please avoid carrying expensive watches, jewellery and electronic items on the trip
  • Also please note this is a comprehensive list & there might be few items which you might not need depending upon the month of travel. Kindly check with us on the final list with us before travelling

Best time for Chadar trek?
The best time to do this trek is just after the winter snow starts to settle in, during the coldest months of January and Februrary; when the temperatures are low enough for the Chadar/ice sheet to be formed properly. All our departure dates are within this period for one to get the best possible experience

What will be the temperature during the trek?
Temperature is the main challenge during this trek, where during nights it may fall down to 25 to 30 degrees below freezing point though during a normal day it may range from -5 to -10 Degree C.

Is diamox recommended?
Since there is not much altitude to be gained during the course, mostly 3400 to 3700m, Diamox is not recommended. We suggest one acclimatizes well by following good health practices in the mountain like getting enough rest, staying hydrated, having sufficient carbohydrates and avoiding alcohol. This is our recommendation but we suggest you get in touch with your physician for the best advice on the subject

Group size?
Anala Outdoors has a strict policy on Responsible Travel and keeping this in mind we do only small groups on any of our treks(max 12 people). This also means extra safety & personal attention for our guests. Chadar Trek is basically on the frozen Zanskar River that the locals use to gain access to the remote Zanskar Valley. Since this is a sensitive zone which may get affected by much trekking activity therefore it makes more sense to promote small groups to minimize the impact on the ‘Chadar’.

Solo lady trekker?
They are as invited as anybody else and as safe as anybody else, which is absolutely safe. Also single women get to share the tent/room with other women only unless they have opted to take rooms/tents on single basis. If there is no other lady on the trip then they get to stay in the room/tent on single basis. Even if there is a single lady on our trip we will have a separate toilet tent while camping, only for ladies. Every trek is lead by two highly skilled and experienced mountaineering guide with good experience of travelling with groups so they ensure that within the group also a certain decorum is maintained

Drinking water?
Natural mineral water is present all over the trail but due to extreme cold weather everything is frozen here, therefore most water is harnessed by melting the ice or from parts of river that are not frozen completely. This water is boiled and filtered before consumption. Carrying a thermos bottle is recommended so as to sustain the warm water for a longer time, as water in normal bottles freezes over the night. We also use water purification tablets if required

Medical emergencies?
In case of any emergency one of our guides along with the porters and support staff will carry/accompany the guest back to the starting point of the trek from where he/she will be driven to the Leh hospital for treatment. We carry first aid arrangements and basic medicines with us on the trek

Fitness level?
Moving at the altitudes ranging from 3400m - 3700m, this trek is not much technical or strenuous, hence does not require any rigorous training for it, though a person needs to be fit and fine to commence and also finish this venture

Type of Footwear?
Although we recommend a high quality waterproof hiking shoes with good grips under them, one can also manage the trek with a local made Gum boot. Saving your feet from getting wet, these affordable shoes can be bought from the local market at Leh city. Other than this it is recommended to carry an extra pair, as a backup.
